🇨🇭Switzerland Travel Adventures: Your Must-Experience Activities

ABBEY: To dos in Switzerland
 —Sledding
All the while I thought this will be a joy ride. Turns out it is thrilling going to dangerous.
Exercise prudence and carefulness as you go the down steep slopes. It was fun at the same time scary. Even though it is a beginner route, it is not at all straight nor flat but with curves as well cliffs.

 —Paragliding
This is where my wife ended up when she negotiated for Sky Diving. Nothing much to be afraid of, right? I was wrong. The pickup from the station to their office and the 20-minute ride to the mountain is ok. But when the instructor started to lay the parachute and seeing the slope where we would run and take flight, that is a different story. Fear crept in on me; can’t help it. I mustered my courage and when my instructor told me to run, I ran like hell. Hahaha. Next thing I know I’m flying. It was nice to see Interlaken from the sky. I’m proud I was able to tell my tandem paraglider to do the roller coaster ride. It is a good experience although it made me dizzy. Advisable to wear sunglass; it helps your eyes from drying and protect them from the bright sun. By the way, don’t scream too loud, the neighbors below don’t like it.

 —Cheese Fondue
Never leave Switzerland without trying cheese fondue. An order is always charged for a minimum of two persons. Prepare to smell the strong cheesy aroma as it is serve and the cheese continues to melt. We got to try the fondue twice. Sad to say we’re not able to finish it on our first try at Jungfrao Hotel but we redeemed ourselves at Hotel Edelweiss at Murren. Maybe because the snow-capped mountain view is magnificent. We ate it with bread and nothing else. But other options include fruits and meats. And partner it with wine.

 —Omega and Swatch Museum
I want to buy a timepiece and it’s a good timing as we will visit Omega and Swatch Museums at Biel/Bienne.
Omega really curated the exhibition is a sophisticated way with audio-visual presentation as well as themes like 007 movies and moon landing where the watches were used.
They also was the sponsor for previous Olympic Games and you can able to test your speed against time.
The Swatch Museum is on the playful side with their colorful watches and sections. We got to see Wilma’s first Swatch (Pink Mermaid) and the As Time Goes By model where the numbers move instead of the hands. You can also order your customized watch.
Unfortunately I’m not able to buy my timepiece on neither museums. Swatch models are not to my liking and Omega’s prices are over the top (maybe some other time). But I appreciate the works being done for them to be produced.

 —CLOY Lake shoot
Once our friends knew that we will visit Switzerland they asked if we will go to CLOY Lake Shoot Location. CLOY (Crash Landing On You) is a Korean Drama which became popular in the Philippines. We told our friends, no. As it turns out, it is only a couple of rides away from our hotel. So off we go. The scenery in the lake is serene, tranquil and cold. Except for the queue in the platform, it is picturesque.

Switzerland Travel Adventures - Your Must-Experience Activities
Switzerland Travel Adventures: Your Must-Experience Activities

WILL: Think Switzerland is just mountains, lakes, and UNESCO sites? Think again! Switzerland is a hotspot for outdoor sports, whether it's winter or summer.

Last winter (2023), we dove into snow sports headfirst. Sledding was on our bucket list, and while it's touted as beginner-friendly, the adrenaline rush had us hanging on for dear life! Pro tip: Scope out the route before renting a sledge if you're a first-timer.

We anticipated paragliding over snow-covered Interlaken but were pleasantly surprised. The aerial view revealed stunning mountains, lush greenery, and the vibrant hues of two famous lakes. Being up there, it's hard not to feel overwhelmed with gratitude, especially for the bond shared with Abbey. Different altitudes offer different perspectives indeed!

As cheese enthusiasts, we couldn't pass up the chance for cheese fondue, especially at 1,650m above sea level. Talk about dining with a view!

While many Swiss museums require tickets or offer discounts with the Swiss Travel Pass, we're all about finding free activities. For a nostalgic journey into Swiss watch-making precision, the Omega and Swatch Museum is a must-visit. Prepare to be transported back to your first Swatch and maybe even leave craving an OMEGA timepiece!

Not into Korean dramas? Neither are we! But while paragliding, our pilot pointed out a lake where scenes from "Crash Landing on You" were filmed. It was too close to ignore, so we made a pit stop on our free day. Locals in Interlaken might even ask if you've visited "CLOY's lake"!

From chocolate factories to mountain peak hopping, Switzerland offers endless adventures beyond the usual tourist spots. Start planning your Swiss escapade now!

🇨🇭Exploring Switzerland with the Swiss Travel Pass: Is It Worth It?

Traveling from Singapore to neighboring countries here in Asia is a breeze, thanks to our robust currency. We are just hailing Grab or taxi our way to our next place to visit. BUT Europe means experiencing a significant currency conversion, especially in countries like Switzerland, where the Swiss Franc's value is considerably higher than our Singapore Dollar. Public transportation will significantly impact our budget, thus Switzerland tourists require more strategic planning.

Exploring Switzerland with the Swiss Travel Pass: Is It Worth It?

So, when planning a trip to Switzerland, one question looms large: Is the Swiss Travel Pass worth it?

To answer this question, read our Switzerland itinerary and compare the costs of individual tickets versus the convenience of the Swiss Travel Pass. Note: We opted for 1st Class tickets to enjoy a more exclusive experience and avoid overcrowding, particularly in the Jungfrau region.

🇨🇭Läderach, Lindt or Cailler? Which is the Best Chocolate Museum in Switzerland?

ABBEY: I am a BIG fan of chocolate. And there’s no way we’ll be missing the chocolate factories when we go to Switzerland.
Upon landing in Zurich, we dropped our luggages at the hotel and off we go to our first order of “business”: go to House of Läderach at Bilten. The train staff even told us that it’s far and we should go to Lindt instead. Little did he know that we will go there as well.

House of Läderach is not that much crowdy and we liked it. We explore the museum how the chocolate was made. We had a sensory experience where we got a chance to taste their chocolate while watching a video that explains how to spot fresh chocolates. Upon seeing their molds, process, and their story we were led to four fountains. Yes, they are all chocolate; milk, dark, white, and blonde. We also experienced to be a chocolatier even for a while. I made my own bar with pistachios and pine nuts and completed it with a ribbon. And while in queue at the cashier we were given samples of liqueur chocolates.

Our next stop is Lindt Home of Chocolate where there are more guests compared to Läderach. Bags should be deposited on lockers. The site exhibits the chocolate journey from trees to table. We indulge with pieces of chocolate bars as well as spoonfuls of chocolate from the fountain.

At the end of the tour you will be able to take home different flavors of chocolate truffles. But limited to one flavor for each guest.

Our last factory is at Maison Cailler at Broc. Entrance here is for free with our Swiss Travel Pass. I liked their tour as it has good narrative and exhibition. As usual we saw how chocolate is made. But the tasting experience is different here. They serve the brown-gold in platters. Taste and sample as many as you want.

Comparing all the three the best for me is Cailler, then Läderach and then Lindt.

Cailler got me for its smoothness and “velvetiness”. Läderach for the effort poured on the handcrafted chocolates. Lindt is “too commercially” for me.

🇨🇭Läderach, Lindt or Cailler? Which is the Best Chocolate Museums in Switzerland?
🇨🇭Läderach,  Lindt or Cailler? Which is the Best Chocolate Museums in Switzerland?

WILL: No trip to Switzerland is complete without indulging in their world-renowned chocolate craftsmanship. While the country may not grow cacao beans, its mastery in chocolate-making is unparalleled. Here are three chocolate museums that are a must-visit for any chocolate enthusiast.

Läderach - Chocolate Museum & Walk-In Atelier - CHF20/pax

When I saw this chocolate here in Singapore, I can’t fathom why it is sooooo expensive. How costly? $S70+ for 300grams! Shocking isn’t? But a visit to their museum in Switzerland proves otherwise. For just CHF20, you gain access to a tour of their chocolate-making legacy, accompanied by a delightful experience of unlimited chocolate tasting (bar and 4 chocolate fountain) and the opportunity to create your own chocolate bar.

Museum focuses on the family’s legacy in chocolate making. It is an art. An advocacy! A family legacy! Despite its popularity, the museum maintains a welcoming ambiance, with friendly staff eager to share their passion. And the best part? You can take home half a kilogram of premium chocolate for just S$30+. Trust me, the taste of their meticulously handcrafted chocolates is worth every penny.

Lindt - Entry Ticket (Pelago) - SGD22.88/pax

Lindt's museum-cum-factory is a staple on many tourists' itineraries, often bustling with eager visitors. While it offers insight into the production process, it leans more towards a commercial experience than a traditional museum visit.

Nonetheless, it's an opportunity to sample Lindt's iconic chocolates, some of which might be rare finds outside of Switzerland.

Cailler - Free with Swiss Travel Pass

Ideal for school field trips, Cailler's museum provides a comprehensive look into the world of chocolate-making. Despite its popularity, the museum manages crowds efficiently, ensuring an enriching experience for all visitors.

While they may lack chocolate fountains, Cailler compensates with innovative displays, including a wheel brimming with cocoa beans and nuts. Yes you can eat/taste those too. And before you bid adieu, don't forget to savor the plated chocolates offered as a parting treat.

After exploring these chocolate havens, it's no surprise that Cailler emerges as a favorite museum. As for my top chocolate pick, Läderach's exquisite craftsmanship and unparalleled flavor leave a lasting impression. Now I know, why Läderach is the Swiss favourite chocolate.

In the end, Switzerland's chocolate museums not only satisfy your sweet tooth but also offer a glimpse into the country's rich confectionery heritage.

🇨🇭Which Switzerland's Mountain Peak Should You Conquer? Rigi, Murren, or Matterhorn?

ABBEY: Each of these locations does give the wow factor. We cruise across Lake Lucerne to and onto a train to reach Mt. Rigi. There we have our first taste of sledging. Going down is another experience via a cable car.

In Murren we got another bowl of fondue and we beat it. Haha. We dined alfresco and we ate the cheesy delight with the view of snow-covered mountains. We are also able to Murrenbachfall in here.

But the main attraction for us is the sight of Matterhorn. I’m used to see it in encyclopedia and Toblerones but this time it is for real. There are shops and restaurant at the top so don’t worry about food. People are lining up for their turn to ski and it is good to see them sliding down on their colorful winter clothes.

🇨🇭Which Switzerland's Mountain Peak Should You Conquer? Rigi, Murren, or Matterhorn?
🇨🇭Which Switzerland's Mountain Peak Should You Conquer? Rigi, Murren, or Matterhorn?

WILL: Switzerland boasts an awe-inspiring 70% coverage of majestic mountains, offering a plethora of choices for adventurers seeking the ultimate peak experience. Standing at the foot of these giants, it's impossible not to feel compelled to ascend to their heights and witness their grandeur firsthand.

Mt. Rigi (1,798 m) — Complimentary with Swiss Travel Pass

The dilemma between Mt. Rigi and Mt. Pilatus is a common one, but for us, the choice was clear: Mt. Rigi, fondly referred to as Switzerland's Queen of the Mountains, beckoned us with promises of unparalleled beauty and adventure.

Our journey to Mt. Rigi was as remarkable as the destination itself. We embarked on a scenic boat ride, marveling at the picturesque vistas along the way. Upon reaching our destination, Vitznau, we embarked on a historic train journey, traversing landscapes that seemed straight out of a postcard. The return journey to Luzerne via Weggis' Cable Car added another layer of excitement to our adventure.

And who could forget our exhilarating experience of sledding for the first time amidst the pristine yet steeply scary snow-capped peaks of Mt. Rigi?

Murren (1,650 m) — Included with Swiss Travel Pass

This was a discover-anything day for us. We just wanted to roam around without any plans. Haha! So, Abbey wanted to see the famous Staubbach Waterfall in Lauterbrunnen. On our way back to the train station, we found flocks of people walking towards the cable car. We asked if we needed to pay extra with our Swiss Travel Pass, and they told us that we did not. So, we hopped in!

As for what to do here? Well, I saw people hiking on the snow, but a lot of people stayed in the hotels located on top of the mountains! Woooohooo! Nice, isn't it? And as for us? What did we do there? We simply devoured another delectable cheese fondue against a backdrop of breathtaking mountain vistas.

Matterhorn (4,478 m) — CHF 47.50

The Matterhorn, Switzerland's iconic peak standing proudly as the fifth highest in the country, beckoned to us with its legendary allure. Its towering, triangular silhouette has captivated the hearts and lenses of countless adventurers and photographers alike, including Abbey, who fondly recalls its appearance on her childhood favorite, Toblerone chocolate.

Gazing in awe at the majestic Matterhorn, we couldn't help but marvel at the sheer beauty of nature's masterpiece. Oh, we had our lunch there too!

And so, if pressed to choose just one peak to visit, the answer is unequivocal: Matterhorn. Its timeless appeal and unmatched splendor make it a must-see destination for any adventurer. But the question remains: where will your mountain journey take you?

🇨🇭Glacier Express vs. GoldenPass: Swiss Train Showdown

ABBEY: Switzerland is known for their trains and we didn’t pass the opportunity to board two of their famous trains; GoldenPass Express and Glacier Express.

Both of the trains showcase a great experience. We were amazed by the snowy winter landscape on the trains’ panoramic windows. Our food was booked and served at the Glacier Express and I can say that nothing fancy about that; it was so-so. However there is a difference in service.

GoldenPass Express took forever to take our order (we are almost at our destination) but for Glacier Express it was swift and we enjoyed our coffee along with the magnificent views. The Glacier Express also chimes to notify the passengers to put on their headphones and listen to information about their current location.

There are other trains that go almost or part of same route as these panoramic trains but we want to have the experience given by these luxury trains. The trip in itself is magical.

Glacier Express Swiss Panoramic Train Video

WILL: Did you know that Switzerland boasts not just one, but five premium panoramic trains, each claiming the title of the world’s most beautiful rail route? If you're planning a trip to this picturesque country, riding one of these trains is an absolute must-do. While time constraints and logistics may limit your choices, we've experienced two of these breathtaking journeys: the GoldenPass Express and the Glacier Express.

GoldenPass Express: December Reservation (CHF: 20.00/pax)

You might have caught glimpses of Switzerland's stunning landscapes in Roger Federer and Trevor Noah's Train Adventure video—that's the GoldenPass Route. What stands out for us? The sheer thrill of traversing cliffs while ascending mountains is unmatched. The engineering precision on display is awe-inspiring; you won't find a dull moment on this ride!

However, it's worth noting that the first-class train can feel a bit cramped, with limited space for luggage. Service can also be slow, which led Abbey to opt out of ordering food altogether. Considering the price per person, the level of comfort and service doesn't quite match expectations.

Glacier Express - December Reservation (CHF: 49.00/pax)

Known as the world's slowest express train, our journey from Zermatt to Chur aboard the Glacier Express was nothing short of spectacular. Picture-perfect scenes of snow-covered valleys unfold before your eyes (don't forget your sunglasses!). Witness locals embracing the winter wonderland with sledges and skis—it's a sight to behold.

With at least three stewards onboard, the service on the Glacier Express is exemplary. They attend to passengers' needs promptly and ensure a comfortable journey throughout. Each seat even comes equipped with earphones, allowing you to delve into the history and must-know facts about various points of interest along the route.

While the onboard food offerings may not be extravagant, the option to bring your own snacks, like chips and wine, adds a personal touch to the journey.

In conclusion, faced with the choice between the GoldenPass and Glacier Express, our vote goes to the Glacier Express without hesitation!

A quick reminder: The reservation fee is separate from the train fare, so be prepared to pay for both when booking your journey.
